The Count of Galicia, Raimundo de Borgoña, introduced this dynasty in the Galician-Leonese monarchy. He was the spouse of Queen Urraca, daughter of King Alfonso VI, and brother of Guido, Pope Callistus II (1119-1124). Both worked in close collaboration with Archbishop Diego Gelmírez, significantly enhancing the See of Compostela and the construction of the Romanesque Cathedral.
There is evidence that, after his death in 1107, he was buried in the cathedral, in “a sarcophagus that was placed in the northern portico in the internal part of the church”, in the space that later on became the Royal Pantheon.
The transfer of the Pantheon in the 16th century to its current location in the cloister building makes it difficult to identify the graves. One of them is traditionally attributed to Raimundo de Borgoña although, due to its characteristics, it is more feasible that it is the tomb of Prince Fernando Alfonso, the firstborn of Alfonso IX who died prematurely in 1214.
