Statuette of Saint Andrew

Statuette of Saint Andrew

Description

Santiago de Compostela, Attributed to Francesco Marino. Ca. 1425. Gilded silver, enamel, and gemstones
It is one of the five images of devotion from the oratory of Archbishop Lope de Mendoza that have been preserved in the Compostela Treasure and the only one attributed, due to its characteristics, to the Italian silversmith Francesco Marino, active in the city of Santiago in that period, although it lacks the identifying punch of this author “FM”.
It is a stylized image with great naturalism, identified by the halo sign and by the attributes he carries in his hands: an open book and the X-shaped cross of his martyrdom.
