Statuette of Saint John the Baptist
Description
Santiago de Compostela, Ca. 1425. Gilded silver, enamel, and gemstones
This statuette and the statuette of Saint Peter are the two images of the group from the oratory of Archbishop Lope de Mendoza that have been attributed to a Compostela master silversmith of the time yet to be identified. Like his partner, he bears an inscription with the name on the crown, and, as attributes, he wears a wool pelisse under the robe and he holds a book with his left hand, in which there is an Agnus Dei at which he points with his left index finger.
