Tympanum of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem
Description

Compostela workshop. Ca. 1240-1250. Granite

It is a piece that originally presided the main cover of the Church of Santo Domingo de Bonaval, a Dominican foundation located at the entrance to the Way of Santiago in the city. In the 17th century, when the temple was renovated, the piece was relocated in the Puerta de los Carros, a location that ended up giving its name to the Tympanum, which in contemporary times was integrated into the collection of the Cathedral Museum.
The representation, following the Gospels and with a strong narrative sense, shows the moment of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey and accompanied by the apostles.
