Juan Luís López García
(Santiago de Compostela,1894-1984))was one ofthe most outstanding artists in the Compostela of the first half of the 2oth century, being able to belong, chronologically and stylistically, in the so-called Generacion del 16,especially active in the city, in the artistic and cultural fields, because of the influence of figures such as Valle-Inclán and Asorey.
Familiarizedwith sacred art since childhood, hehad along career during which, thanks to the different training grants he enjoyed, he showed a deep knowledge of the great masters of art history adding, according to the time, different infuences into his work, from the Italian Primitives to the French post-impressionists, through symbolism and pre-Raphaelite art. This is evidenced by the abundant artistic production that has reached our days, preserved in different cultural institutions, public and private, as well as in a large number of private collectors.
Although he lived and developed his career, both artistic and professional, in different places, the essence of his origins in Compostela -the place to which he always returned- had a prominent presence in his painting. In regard to the cathedral, he carried out important works between 1918and 1929 and some of them were direct orders for the cathedral such as the Pentecost Triptych, originally intended for the chapel of the Sancti Spiritus;and, on other occasions, for institutions such as the Deputación Provincial da Coruna, for which he painted the eight Jacobean theme panels displayed in this expositionunderthe direction of Francisco Lloréns.
